I make sure that my family and I follow some good eating habits on a regular basis. We do eat fried food, sweets, etc. during parties and festivals but we try to avoid these things on a regular basis.
- We start our days with a couple of glasses of warm water.
- We eat some almonds in the morning.
- We don’t skip our breakfasts. The kids have also adopted this habit.
- We eat a decent amount of raw vegetables and fruits every day.
- We prefer home cooked meals. When we are eating out, we prefer to order stir fried vegetables over deep fried food.
- We eat our dinner at least a couple of hours before going to bed.
While we do many things as a family, I try to maintain some healthy habits on my own as well.
- I do not drink water with my meals. I either drink it before or sometime after meals.
- I do not drink soda at all. In fact nobody in our family drinks soda. I also don’t buy any packaged juices - only fresh juices for me.
- I use jaggery, honey and regular light brown sugar in my kitchen. I do not eat/buy/use anything which says sugar-free. I avoid any kind of substitute sugars.
- I use regular butter and Ghee. I absolutely avoid any kind of “olive oil” butter, lard, margarine etc.
- I also sparingly use olive oil, peanut oil, and also some vegetable oil but not a whole lot.
- I opt for whole wheat bread over white. At home, I prefer wheat flour over all-purpose flour to make Indian breads, cakes etc.
- I drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
- I do eat sweets but I avoid eating sugar loaded desserts like pastries, ice creams, and Indian sweets like gulab jamun on a regular basis.
- I don’t use any canned food in my kitchen.
- I also don’t use any food which has corn syrup or high fructose syrup.
